How long will I have to wait to get my new Teric?
The scuba community received the news of the launching of the Teric with a level of enthusiasm we were not expecting. Early in the morning of our Teric launch I had a casual conversation with our founder, Bruce Partridge. Bruce was asking me if I thought we would sell more than x amount of Terics in the first month. I said it was very possible because that number divided among the number of dealers that we have around the world meant that each dealer would purchase a reasonable amount of units.
To our surprise, in only 3 days Teric orders surpassed the number Bruce and I were discussing. We heard the same story from dealers around the world repeated multiple times: their first tentative order was quickly oversold and now they needed a new order, twice as large. Things snowballed from there. Lead times were growing at an unprecedented rate. We were not expecting demand levels to go so high for the Teric.
What does this mean to you as a future Teric owner?
If your dive shop placed an order early after our announcement, and your dive buddy placed an order with your dive shop soon after, your dive buddy might have a Teric en route as we speak. Perhaps she's already received her Teric. After seeing it on her arm, you decided you want one too. But now, your shop tells you will have to wait months before you get your Teric. Please be gentle with your dive shop. I'm sure they would be delighted to sell you one and deliver it immediately if they could.
What is Shearwater doing about this?
At Shearwater we really, really care about our customers. It is our first core value. We try very hard to live by it every day. We are divers ourselves and we know how frustrating it can be to go to that Roatan dive trip without a piece of kit you ordered sometime ago. So to alleviate the Teric deficit, we are increasing our production capacity and maximizing production lines. We are also doing lots of overtime. We are coordinating our supply chains to ensure no shortages. Our employee roster is about to be more than triple what it used to be 4 years ago. The end result we are aiming for is to promptly supply a Teric to any diver who wants to buy it within a matter of days, just like we are able to do with a Perdix order.
What can you do?
If you have finalized your purchase decision, please place an order with your dealer as soon as you can and instruct him to place his order with us as soon as possible so that you establish your place in the queue. At the moment of order placement your dive shop will receive the lead time estimate. Lead times can be volatile as production ramps up and as new orders are received. In the meantime, keep in mind that other Shearwater computers like the Perdix, Perdix AI and Petrel are readily available. We are very appreciative of your patience and do not take lightly the vote of confidence that the scuba community has placed on us by making us a leading brand in the industry.
